Do I need Treatment?

Do I Need Addiction Treatment?

Many people struggle with the question, “Do I need treatment?”
Uncertainty is common, and asking this question does not mean something is “wrong” with you. It means you’re reflecting on your relationship with substances and your well-being.

There is no single definition of when someone “needs” treatment. Addiction and substance use exist on a spectrum, and different levels of support are appropriate for different people at different times.

This page is designed to help you self-evaluate and better understand whether additional support may be helpful for you or someone you care about.

Questions to Ask Yourself

You do not need to answer “yes” to every question for help to be appropriate. Even a few of these experiences may be worth paying attention to.

About Substance Use

  • Have you tried to cut back or stop using, but found it difficult?

  • Do you use substances more often or in larger amounts than you intended?

  • Do you think about using even when you don’t want to?

About Daily Life

  • Has substance use affected your work, school, or responsibilities?

  • Have relationships been strained because of alcohol or drug use?

  • Do you avoid activities you once enjoyed unless substances are involved?

About Health and Safety

  • Have you experienced withdrawal symptoms when not using?

  • Have you used substances to cope with stress, anxiety, or emotional pain?

  • Have you put yourself in risky situations while using?

About Control and Consequences

  • Have you continued using despite negative consequences?

  • Do you feel guilt, shame, or concern about your use?

  • Have others expressed concern about your substance use?

If these questions resonate, it may be a sign that additional support could be helpful.

What “Needing Treatment” Can Mean

Needing help does not automatically mean inpatient rehab or residential treatment. Support can take many forms, including:

  • Talking with a licensed professional for an evaluation

  • Outpatient or intensive outpatient programs (IOP)

  • Peer support or recovery communities

  • Short-term stabilization or detox (when medically necessary)

  • Education and planning around next steps

Only a licensed medical or behavioral health professional can determine whether treatment is clinically necessary. However, understanding your situation is often the first step toward making informed decisions.

You Don’t Have to Decide Everything Right Now

Many people delay reaching out because they feel pressure to “have it all figured out.” You don’t.

Exploring options, asking questions, or seeking clarification does not commit you to treatment. It simply helps you better understand what support exists and whether it may be appropriate for your situation.
